The UK Biopharma Agency (UBA) has fined 12,000 pounds ($14,000) product managers (PMs) for failing to report the presence of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in their product labels. This was the second fined for a similar offence.
The PMs’fine for the manufacturing of Viagra and Cialis was £2.5m and £5.5m, respectively, but the fines will go to a separate enforcement agency called the Pharmaceutical Enforcement Unit (PETA).
UBA enforcement will review the PMs’ labels for active pharmaceutical ingredients, including those with ‘P’ on them. The agency will then assess the drug’s safety and efficacy and, if appropriate, whether the PMs, or its PMS, have complied with the PEPAs (Proper Application of Paediatrics).
UBA PMs will not be allowed to seize pharmaceutical products that are not labelled as PEPAs.
UBA PMs will only be allowed to seize pharmaceutical products which do not have an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) on them. UBA PMs will not be allowed to seize pharmaceutical products which do not contain a PEPA or which are not labelled as PEPAs.
The PMs are also not allowed to seize pharmaceutical products which do not have ‘P’ on their label.
UBA PMs have published their results from the PETA’s review of the drug’s labels which are currently taking place.
The agency will then assess the drug’s efficacy and whether it has been linked to serious adverse effects.
UBA enforcement will review the PMs’ labels for ‘serious adverse effects’, and will also review their side effect reporting system.
The PMs’ labels are being processed by the Medigap UK Ltd (MBUK).
The agency has identified a number of PMs who have received a number of reports regarding an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) in their product labels. These reports include those relating to the following:
The PMs will continue to report these and other adverse effects via their Medigap UK’s Yellow Card Reporting System, which allows PMs to report adverse effects to the appropriate Medigap. PMs will continue to report suspected adverse effects via their Medigap UK’s Yellow Card Reporting System.
UBA enforcement will continue to investigate the safety of pharmaceutical products sold in the UK, but will not be required to submit a report of suspected adverse effects to the Medicines and Healthcare products the UK Biopharma Agency (UBA) has issued for products sold in the UK.
